Tara Lisa McCarthy is a children’s book author whose stories explore emotion, empathy, and the inner lives of children. Her work is grounded in the belief that some of the most important experiences of childhood happen beneath the surface—in the quiet thoughts, shifting feelings, and small moments that shape how children understand themselves and others.
With a background in law and a lifelong interest in storytelling, Tara brings both precision and imagination to her writing. She is drawn to concept-driven picture books that make invisible emotional experiences visible, whether through quiet observation, magical realism, or simple metaphors that help children name what they feel.
Her manuscripts include Where the Quiet Lives, a lyrical exploration of presence and belonging; Zip Zip Away, a magical realism story about stepping into the emotional lives of others; and The Thought Bubble That Grew, a concept-driven story about anxiety, awareness, and learning to name one’s thoughts.
Tara is currently seeking literary representation for her picture book manuscripts. She writes for children, and for the adults who read with them, with the hope of creating stories that open space for reflection, understanding, and connection.
